An Ongoing List on How to Stay Creative and Optimistic
Hi Friends,
We hope this finds you calm and healthy and if possible, at your homes. In these uncertain times, it’s important to remember that community can still exist, even when feeling isolated.
We want to continue to be an outlet for relief and creativity, to connect one another even when we have to be physically distant. We’ve been in touch with the members of our community to see what they’re up to; how they are staying calm, optimistic and channeling creative energy while at home. We compiled a list that we will be updating every day for the time being. We hope this serves as a daily resource for you to come back to and refresh. If you’d like to add to this list feel free to email us at wassup@pond-mag.com.

Accept the things you cannot change!!!
Get your hands in some dirt and repot your houseplants. It will help you feel connected to the earth and remind you that things are still growing.
Home improvement projects such as changing all of your cabinet hardware or installing a backsplash will make you feel strong and capable of literally anything.
Bring levity into your life by communicating in meows with your cat.
Eat more veggies.
Drink more tea, drink less coffee, but most of all, drink more water! It will make you feel less groggy.
Remove the TV from your common space and foster communal time around records and writing.
Play Catan with your roommates.
Limit your face time on apps like Twitter and Instagram to 20 minutes twice a day.
Exercise critical thinking, dark humor, and snarky retort with Red Scare Podcast and season 2 of Netflix's The Degenerates.
Listen to tunes from, artist, Willie Stewart's 21 hour Story Playlist. Alternately, the High Fidelity Soundtrack rocks.
Transcribe all of your iPhone Notes poetry into a word doc and print it out.
Submit a photo to Pete Voelker's Pix 011 or Shelter and Place zines.
Dress for the occasion. I wore a chainlink top while working from home yesterday.
If you're short on cash, negotiate an art trade with a friend. If you have the resources, consider purchasing something from another artist and from small dealers like approx.blue.
Reconsider religion through prayer and meditation.
Last but not least, I'd like to remind you of the obvious: your apartment looks like shit and, girl, you ain't going nowhere. Reallocate your fashion spending to vintage home goods.

It is strange to think that so many young people have been told, on numerous occasions, that they are in fact living in a certain societal, or economic event is a once in a generation-like moment. It is interesting to think about the why, or the what that has put these obstacles in front of us, but I don’t believe the answer is one specific thing or another.
Not to use buzzwords when they are unwarranted, but we are indeed living in an unprecedented time. And, the feelings of fear and uncertainty can be felt like a shockwave, all while happening on a global scale like never before. And for that reason, it may come as no surprise that the places where we congregate on an immense and/or massive level: sporting events, concerts, and things of that nature, were among the first industry-level gathering types to be uprooted by COVID-19.
I remember going to see the band PONY, at PJ’s Lager House here in Detroit, the night the virus had escalated to the call of a global pandemic. We had a tour planned for the summertime with this group, and my bandmates and I wanted to meet the people we were going to be sharing the road with, while they were on a short run of the midwest.
I found myself at the bar, ordered a drink, and I recall that the Dallas Mavericks’ game was on the television above me. The ESPN newsflash banner waived across the bottom of the screen, stating that the virus was now at this heightened level. Shortly after, Mark Cuban caught the attention of the cameras after he had heard that the NBA season was now going to be postponed.
We didn’t really think much of it at the time, privy to what would come next.
I have been home now for about a month. I’ve managed to keep myself occupied by writing and recording, but the intrusive thought of if things will ever reach normalcy again, does linger. The majority of the stuff I have been working on lately reflects this weary feeling. A lot of artists, I have to think, share this same sense with me. Sure, my writer's block may be gone for the time being, but, being who or what we are as artists and musicians, we rely on an entertainment business that really needs to be viewed as a luxury instead of a right in this current climate. Many people in this industry are suffering at the moment, and the economic aspect is just one of several facets bringing on this pain.
I love making music. I love playing live, and having my best friends around me in doing so. Right now, I feel thankful for those moments especially. Live streams, and all the things I have seen musicians do in this time, have been a breath of fresh air. It shows that, no matter what, people want to bring art, as an articulation of unrest, to the forefront. No matter what the vernacular may be. I think the take-away is that music simply helps, and it provides a voice for many. In some way, this could be looked at as a test of our craft, as well as a test for what symbolism music provides for us in life’s most uncertain times.
My roommate Jack and I, have been sending demos to each other back and forth. He is currently with his family, while I am at our home that we share, about an hour away in driving time. It is kind of beautiful how this barrier, in a way, has been broken, where we want to share even the littlest idea we have, or any music that stands out to us. Right now, anything can sound good. And, for those who are creative, I must tell you that this is the time to make something special. Our current limitations will give way to our future craft and creation. For, art is a medium, which can never be silenced; it can be loud, poignant, or be the manifestation of our most deepest feelings.
In closing, I would like to ask you to put yourself on a creative pedestal, even if it feels unnatural. And, even if you know just three chords on guitar, write a song with those three chords. Even if you only have five types of acrylic paint in your house, try to paint something beautiful; do it for yourself first and foremost. It is fair to say that creativity inspires others, even if they do not find themselves to be creative in a certain sense. If you are inspired, share it. It may inspire somebody else to make something they might have never thought they could before.
Stay safe, peace & love

Journal! Sit down undistracted and free write about anything you want. Just start writing and don't think too hard about it. I've also been following these journal prompts some days. You just put in your email and they send you a prompt to write about everyday!

Sometimes, escaping with some good, old fashioned reality-TV heightened drama makes you feel like everything is a-okay in your little solitude space. Choose your weapon: Jersey Shore or Love & Hip Hop.
Being locked down in Los Angeles, I find myself wanting to travel to the opposite coast— to a different era. Meet Me in the Bathroom by Lizzie Goodman is a read that will transport you to the dingy clubs of early-2000's New York...and may inspire a shower post-read.
This is sort of a weird one, associated with my OCD but I promise it can work: if you find yourself mindlessly playing video-games— put on a podcast pertaining to something you're interested in simultaneously, where you can learn. Not to sound like a parent but this is a real brain cleanser.
Dominic Apa, Musician, IS TROPICAL, Barrie
Reading Gödel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid. Amazing, surreal book about the nature of consciousness. In the spirit of Prometheus Rising.

Watching Lawrence Krauss on ‘A Universe from Nothing’, an inspiring lecture on why we might be living in a crucial time for asking questions and having them answered by the cosmos.
Elena Childers, Writer + Host, BTR Today
Dress up! Wear that gown/tux you only wore once and put on that drag queen makeup you've been too afraid to try, why not?
Write/ draw/ paint/ etc. The only people who are going to see it are archeologists who have dug your poetry/ short stories/ plays/ whatever up after we've all gone extinct from the apocalypse and it will end up in a museum even if they only find one word from you, you ancient celestial being.
I've been doing this thing where I just look at a spot in my home or outside the window that I've looked at a million times, but I try to see it in a different light. Maybe create a story surrounding the object and/ or scene. Turn it into something that has meaning to you. The more specific you focus on a thing/ area the more detailed you can get!
